CRC Overview

1. History

The Clinical Research Center (CRC) was funded through an infrastructure grant from the National Center for research resources in 1996. The CRC was the first freestanding outpatient research facility of its kind to receive full accreditation by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations [JCAHO], both in the State of Georgia and nationally.

Research studies are conducted in the 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art outpatient facility using the most current equipment. The center has: Five fully equipped examination rooms; Shared Use Laboratories; 16 Bed Study Participant Observation Unit; State-of-the-art Emergency Alert System; Cardiovascular Laboratory; Negative Pressure Isolation Exam Room and state-of-the-art metabolic kitchen.

Located in the Multidisciplinary Research Building, the CRC provides Nursing, laboratory and administrative support for investigator - initiated and multicenter clinical trials in cardiovascular disease, cancer, clinical pharmacology, HIV-AIDS and community based research.

2. Mission

The CRC of Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) has been established to provide the infrastructure for Clinical Faculty at MSM to conduct clinical research. Through the initiative, the number of African American and other minority clinicians involved in clinical research will be increased.

Furthermore since the patient population served by MSM is predominantly African American, the CRC is in the African American community. Complementing this effort is the similar service provided by the CRC to the medically undeserved of all races.

3. Vision

By the year 2010, the Clinical Research Center of Morehouse School of Medicine will be a nationally and internationally recognized clinical research center on the health of African American and other undeserved populations.
