Goal or Purpose:


To use the home automatic external defibrillator (AED) to determine if there is an improved survival rate in patients with ventricular fibrillation associated with cardiac arrest.  Spouses or live in companions will train to successfully provide help or administer the AED in the event of a heart attack.

Inclusion Criteria:


Patients with physician diagnosed Q-wave anterior myocardial infarction
18 yrs of age < Men and Women
All patients must have a spouse or companion living with them willing and capable of calling EMS, doing CPR, and using A.E.D.
The spouse/companion must sign the co-sign consent form and like patient must be willing to give permission to the HAT coordinating center and site investigators to retrieve personal information and medical information from them and/or their providers.

Exclusion Criteria:


Patients and spouses/companions unable to provide informed consent
Patient with “Do Not Attempt Resuscitation” orders
Patients with personal Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
Patients with implantable cardioverter/defibrillator (ICD)
Patients who are currently candidates for and will receive an ICD using established clinical guidelines

Duration:
2 years and approximately 3 visits
