African American men and women have the highest prevalence of strokes and cardiovascular disease in the United States . African Americans living in the southeastern region of the nation have a higher mortality rate from strokes than their white counterparts. For these reasons, Morehouse School of Medicine's Center for Health Disparities has a research component program in Cardiovascular Health and Stroke Prevention.

Our goal is to identify the causes and strategies to eliminate this disparity by concentrating on systems of evaluation/surveillance, environmental factors, access to quality medical care, lifestyle choices, and gene-environment interactions.

African American men living in impoverished communities within metropolitan Atlanta ( Fulton County ), are hospitalized for strokes at a rate three times higher than African American men living in other Atlanta communities. The same African American men living in poverty have rates of hypertension that are six times that of men living elsewhere in the community.

In addition, there appear to be striking geographic and socioeconomic disparities in stroke risk among Georgians living in rural coastal counties relative to Georgians in urban areas.

The enhancement of cardiovascular health and stroke prevention involves collaborative interactions between the Cardiovascular Research Institute, the Social Epidemiology Research Division, the Department of Community Health and Preventative Medicine, the Neuroscience Institute, the National Center of Primary Care and the Clinical Research Center at MSM.

This collective group of MSM investigators works community outreach and community partnerships that contribute to the reduction of cardiovascular disease/stroke risk in ethnic communities.
