Since 1987 Morehouse
School of Medicine has been building
community and academic partnerships in
rural areas of Georgia and in low-income
predominately African American sections
within Atlanta. |
| Our collaborations include
organizations such as: other HBCU's in
the AUC, Georgia State University College
of Health and Human Sciences,
Fulton County Department of Health and
Wellness, Atlanta Public Schools, the
Atlanta Empowerment Zone, and the Atlanta
Housing Authority. Morehouse School
of Medicine has been the recipient of
two national awards for its dedication
to community service. In 1999, the school
received the Association of American
Medical Colleges' Outstanding Community
Service Award and in 2002 the Community-Campus
Partnerships for Health was given to
the school. |
| The
Community Outreach and Information
Dissemination Component has three core
objectives: |
- partner with other academic institutions
to develop and disseminate culturally
sensitive health information
directly related to the research
of the Center as well as
general health information presented
in a culturally sensitive manner;
- partner with the community to
conduct evidence-based health
promotion and disease prevention
interventions and to develop community
capacity to improve population health;
- partner with public schools
to conduct science education
outreach activities and to recruit
the next generation of scientists
and researchers.
|
| To
meet the set forth objectives current
community partnerships have been
established with an education core
consisting of an interdisciplinary
service-learning MSM/GSU/AUC
Community Health Course, a research
core with the MSM Prevention Research
Center, and a service core where
MSM in conjunction with its community
partners sponsor a number of service
projects.
