A community-based approach to the elimination of health disparities requires the involvement of the community, its organizations, residents and institutions. An effective community-academic partnership includes relevant community advisory groups composed of community participants, forming interconnected networks of community health

providers, key community institutions (schools, churches, other organization, etc.), private industry and consumers. The community partnership resource consists of several components that serve to support community outreach, service and research. To date, service and research activities include the formation of community working
groups; grant development, funding opportunities, health screenings and health fairs, community health awareness campaigns, health education, cultural competence activities and information dissemination. The community resource works collaboratively with the other components of the center and other community groups including plans to further relationships with the

community provider network and projects with community centers throughout the southeast.
The specific aims of the community partnership development resource are:
  • to formalize the community partnerships between MSM and the other academic institutions of the AUC as well as faith-based organizations prominently involved in health initiatives and activities directed toward the elimination of health disparities;
  • to create consumer participant groups, representative of the
    partnerships, that will act as advisors to academic researchers on community-based research projects; and
  • to advise on the development of culturally appropriate and culturally sensitive materials and interventions for health focused activities.
