According to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report of 1999 and the World Health Organization Reports of 1996 and 2001, mental health disorders are prevalent in this society and often times are disabling. African Americans and other minorities within the United States are disproportionately affected with mental illness. Mental health impacts our overall health and well being. Through the strides that have been made in mental disorders, 80-90% of disorders are treatable. Unfortunately, less

than half of adults with mental illness seek treatment and less than one third of children receive treatment. The lack in receiving treatment is due in part to the stigma that surrounds mental disorders.

The Mental Health Research Core is a developmental area for Morehouse School of Medicine. The effort of this core has been to:
  • identify disparities in depression treatment among elderly Medicaid clients, and
  • eliminate disparities in detection, treatment, and referral of depression in primary care settings.

We will launch a public awareness campaign targeted at the misconception about mental health and the discrimination that surrounds mental illness. In conjoined efforts with community organizations, depression screening programs will be developed and implemented.
