It is a challenge to find
the link between ethnic disparities and
the causes, process, and development
of diseases. It is postulated that the
resolution of this problem will require
a concerted, multi-disciplinary approach
that includes investigators and practitioners
dedicated to serving ethnic populations
within their communities. |
| The Translational Research
core will offer a centralize location where
researchers can share and collect biological
information that will aid in leading-edge
basic science technologies to probe the
biological basis of health disparities.
This integration of knowledge from lab
bench-to-bedside-to-community is another
fulfillment of the “three-dimensional
approach" to health disparities research. |
The
ultimate goal is for the Translational
Research Basic Science Core Resource
to promote the links between each
of these disciplines. Our approach
to establishing this core will include
several elements including:
|
- 1)
the capacity to acquire, systematically
track and analyze pathological
specimens derived from both clinical
and population-based studies,
- the capacity to
assess the potential genetic
contributions to ethnic disparities
in health by incorporating
state-of-the-art genomic technologies
into clinical and population-based
research, and
- the utilization
of biomedical informatics as a technology
that facilitates the integration
of data from population-based
surveys with parameters characterized
by clinical assessment and
incorporated with pathological,
biochemical, and molecular
assays of patho-biological
specimens. Overall, this
shared resource will facilitate the
multi-disciplinary research
needed to gain new insights
into the etiologic basis
of health disparities.
