Liability Gene Among African Americans

The major aims of this grant are to identify
genes that underlie liability for schizophrenia.
To this end, this eight-site multicenter study
will recruit 1260 African American families with
at least one affected family member. These will
contribute to standard Affective Sibling and Relative
Pair linkage analysis and to Quantitative Trait
Locus analysis of neurocognitive traits.

The major aims of this multidisciplinary grant
is to conduct population studies in determining
Polymorphism of CYP2D6 in African Americans, Study
includes genotyping and phenotyping and estimating
the role of age, concurrent drugs and medical
illnesses and environmental variables on CYP2D6
activity. We currently have data on over 300 participants
that is being analyzed.

The major aims of this grant are to: establish
the capabilities for conducting mental health
research (with emphasis on depression) at Morehouse
School of Medicine; to facilitate minorities in
choosing research careers in mental health (from
undergraduate to faculty levels). This grant also
will provide “seed” grants to enable
preliminary data gathering for subsequent independent
grant applications for new investigators and mentoring
throughout their training period. The grant also
includes two prospectively designed studies in
screening, diagnosing and treatment of depression
in African Americans.
