Public Health Summer Fellows Program
The Public Health Summer Fellowship Program is a joint collaboration between Rollins School of Public Health, Morehouse School of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This collaboration provides a unique setting for developing new skills and knowledge. The program is directed toward rising junior and senior undergraduate students of African, Latino, Native American and Asian/Pacific Islander descent.
The Public Health Summer Fellows Program, a collaboration between Emory Rollins School of Public Health, Morehouse School Of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Minority Health Professions Foundation, is designed to introduce and expose minority students to the exciting field of public Health The program offers summer internships for junior, senior and recent college and university graduates at a time when the experience will hopefully impact their professional goals and career choice.
Program Outline
The Public Health Summer Fellows program is an academically rigorous and intensive eight (8) week summer program. Students will experience firsthand the excitement, relevance and promise of careers in Public Health. The program’s focus includes:
- Principles of Epidemiology
- Disease Surveillance/Investigation
- Community Based Public Health Research
The program commences with a week course to provide students with foundation in the principles of epidemiological research. The program then combines this academic knowledge with direct hands on field experience. Using the combined resources of program sponsors and collaborators, students are placed into community based public health internships. During this six week internship, participants work with professional mentors who are at the forefront of researching the nation’s priority public health issues. Students will participate in weekly seminars and learn how to analyze important health policy, programming and research issues. During the final week of the program Fellows participate in a symposium and provide oral presentations on their internship experiences.
Selection Criteria
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled as rising junior or senior undergraduate students or have received an undergraduate degree within a six months prior to the application deadline. Applicants must be of African-American, Native American, Latino, or Asian/Pacific Islander ethnic decent.
Student selection is based on a criteria of:
1. GPA
2. Statement of Interest (student essay)
3. Recommendations
4. Leadership ability and skill
Stipend
Participants will receive a stipend upon completion of the program. Housing, meals, local public transportation cost, and travel to and from Atlanta are provided.

Application Deadline: February 28, 2007

Official transcripts must be mailed directly from academic institutions. Completed packages and transcripts must be received by the application deadline.
