Third Year Clerkship

Lectures

Each attending physician has been assigned a set of lectures and he or she is responsible for giving the lectures at the scheduled date and time.

  • Providing the original handouts (Ms. Teamor makes copies for the students).
  • Providing the clerkship with a CD of the lecture.
  • Making appropriate updates on the lectures as needed.

Lecture objectives were furnished to all attendings and all should adhere to these.

Clinics

Some Grady and MMA clinics have third-year students rotating through them. The attending physician is responsible for the instruction of our students in these settings. Every effort should be made to include students in patient care activities in order for these to be meaningful educational experiences. When and where appropriate, the faculty member should supervise students doing history and physical examinations.

Preceptorship

Some faculty members were appointed student preceptors. All preceptors should endeavor to meet with the students at the scheduled time to go over cases, which must include the following topics:

  • PID
  • Pap smear
  • Contraception
  • Cervical cancer
  • Third trimester bleeding

These sessions should be informal allowing students to seek clarification on gaps in their learning. It should be interactive.

Student evaluations

Attending physician evaluation of students is an important function of all faculty. These are used in the calculation of the student’s final clinical grade. These evaluations once handed to the faculty must be completed and returned to Ms Teamor in a timely manner. Narrative evaluation of each student is critically vital as these are used in the clerkship director’s descriptive evaluation of the students and are part of the dean’s letter.

AM/PM Rounds

Each faculty should encourage student participation, especially on morning rounds, and should ensure that these are used as a teaching opportunity. Attending participation at evening rounds is equally important.

Breast/Pelvic exams

The department provides teaching on breast and pelvic exams for the second year medical students. Everyone is expected to participate in this activity, which includes sessions using modes and standardized patients. These classes are held each February through March and everyone should sign up for at least one session.

OSCE Committee

  • Comprises Drs. Roberts, Sokoya, White and Bright.
  • These faculty will be responsible for creating OSCE cases and critiquing the
actual OSCE examination with the aim of improving student performance at
    subsequent exams.
