FAQs

Unrestricted Giving to the Morehouse School of Medicine

Q. What are unrestricted funds and why are they important?
A. Unrestricted funds are what the name implies—gifts that allow the flexibility needed to meet unforeseen needs and immediate opportunities. Your unrestricted gifts are especially valuable because they allow the Morehouse School of Medicine to address priorities and enhance programs not covered by endowment or other sources of income.  They support student scholarships, facility improvements, technology enhancements, and library upgrades.

Q. What do unrestricted gifts say about my commitment to the Morehouse School of Medicine?
A. An unrestricted gift is one of the best commitments one can make to the institution.  When you give an unrestricted gift, you are entrusting the Morehouse School of Medicine’s leadership to make the best decisions for the School about the use of unrestricted funds.

In return for your vote of confidence, we will exercise thoughtful stewardship to make sure the funds are used wisely to carry out the mission of the School as we “Prepare Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Health Care.”

Q. Why is there a need for unrestricted funds right now?
A.  Medical research and education are constantly evolving.  The Morehouse School of Medicine must remain flexible to respond to these changes.  New procedures and new discoveries require today’s medical students to have access to the most current information and technology. Your unrestricted gift helps us as we “Prepare Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Health Care.”

Currently, the Morehouse School of Medicine is highly dependent upon income earned from its endowment; however, much of this is restricted. Unrestricted funds will allow us the flexibility needed to meet current needs.

Q. Would my gift make a difference?
A.  Yes!  Every gift is important, and every gift—large or small—counts. Your gift could purchase a stethoscope for a student, provide several textbooks, or pay for a journal subscription.  When your gift is combined with all other gifts, we all participate in making a difference.  Perhaps David Winfield, retired Hall of Fame baseball player and former member of the Morehouse School of Medicine Board of Trustees, said it best: “When I write a check to the Morehouse School of Medicine, I know I am making more than a gift. I am making a difference.”

Q. What is the Hugh M. Gloster Society?
A. The Hugh M. Gloster Society recognizes individual donors who make unrestricted gifts of $1,000, $3,000, or $5,000 to the 2006-07 Annual Fund.  Also, corporate and foundation donors become members of this Society with unrestricted annual gifts of $10,000, $30,000, or $50,000 to the Annual Fund.  Individual donors must renew gifts annually at $1,000 or more to maintain membership in the Society.  Corporate and foundation donors must renew annually between $10,000 and $50,000 to remain in the Society.  You can reach the minimum $1,000 a year level by giving $83.34 a month for 12 months. Those making contributions of $1,000 or more between July 1, 2006, and December 31, 2007, become charter members of the Hugh M. Gloster Society.  For more information on the Society and membership benefits, click on the link for the Gloster Society.
