Summer Science Institute
This three-tiered (medical student, college students, high school students) mentoring program was designed to attract and retain talented African-American men into careers in medicine and biomedical science. While there are more academically gifted African-American men than ever before, many are being attracted to law, engineering, or business – careers that do not require as much training. With the declining enrollment of African-American men into careers in medicine, Dr. Joan Liverpool designed this program in 1994. Now in the tenth year, our young men spend time equally split between personal developmental activities (risk reduction discussions, study skills, financial planning are some topics discussed) and clinical preceptorship with physicians, a dentist, and other health care personnel. Students also have exposures to many colleges, universities, and medical schools, featuring a field trip to Nashville to visit Fisk University, Tennessee State University, and Meharry Medical College. Our students also had a long discussion with MSM President Dr. James Gavin (one of our students asked him if he enjoyed being the “Principal” of Morehouse School of Medicine!) Dr. Gavin was quite inspirational as a role model for these young men.
