Established in 2001, the Center for Community Health and Service-Learning (Center) at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) is designed to engage medical students, faculty and staff in service-learning activities in partnership with community and faith based organizations in underserved communities. Initially funded by a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Center plays an integral role at MSM and continues to expand its programming to include civic engagement, volunteerism and community service for academic and underserved communities.
Our vision is to inspire a connected, caring community of lifelong learners who provide valuable and meaningful service to underserved communities in metropolitan Atlanta.
Our goals and objectives are to develop and implement community service activities for Morehouse School of Medicine’s students, faculty and staff, our academic affiliates, and community volunteers that are consistent with our school’s mission of providing service to underserved and minority communities.
Our Programs reflect the communities in which we serve and offer opportunities for citizens, students, faculty and staff to learn through civic engagement.
Learn and Serve is the Center’s longest running project and is designed to engage medical and graduate students in community service linked to academic achievement and the development of civic skills. Our partners include community and faith based organizations, academic institutions, educational agencies and other non-profits
Homeland Security Special Volunteer Program (HLS) is the Center’s newest project, designed to engage volunteers, targeting persons 55 and older, in educating their own communities on emergency preparedness issues and assisting first responders in the event of a city wide emergency. HLS collaborates with the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness and other agencies in Fulton County.
