The Center for Community Health and Service Learning in the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine has developed a Special Volunteer Program for Homeland Security.

The Program will develop a medical and non-medical pool of volunteers who will be available to assist the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness and other emergency response teams in meeting local efforts in responding to man-made and natural disasters. The program will recruit, train/retain, and provide opportunities for volunteers to respond to local emergencies and public health needs.

Under the direction of Dr. Meryl McNeal, Principle Investigator; Richard Harris, Assistant Project Director; Edna Davis, Volunteer/Program Manager; LaShaun M. Alston, Recruiter; Paulette Graves, Program Assistant; and Danyala Cotton, Administrative Assistant; the program will recruit 100 retired or practicing health professionals and 200 non-medical volunteers.

The Medical Volunteers will serve in the medical reserve corps and will be available to be deployed to critical sites as indicated by the Health Department.

The non-medical volunteers will provide emergency preparedness training for identified communities will recruit and train other community members on deploying local emergency plans and in the event of a local emergency, will be available to be deployed to critical sites by the Health Department.
