Learn & Serve Homeland Security Community Partners

Service Learning can be defined as a structured learning experience which combines community service with student preparation and reflection. A connecting link is established between academics and service. It combines service to the community with student learning in a way that educates the student and improve the community. The National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993 defines the essential components of service learning as:

  • Learning and developing through organized service activities that are meeting identified community needs.
  • A method whereby students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets community needs.
  • Coordination with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program and the community.
  • Education that foster civic responsibility.
  • Activity that is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the education components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled.
  • Activity that provides structured time for students or participants to reflect on the service experience.
