At Morehouse we concern ourselves with health care delivery as well as the social condition of our patients.  We are committed to service as well as education and training because the poor and underserved community needs our help.  The surgical residency training program is a five-year residency, accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  Our main facility is Grady Memorial Hospital, located in downtown Atlanta, serving Fulton and Dekalb counties.  Training also takes place at three affiliate hospitals: Scottish Rite Children’s Medical Center, Columbus Medical Center, and South Fulton Medical Center.

1.The basic goal of graduate surgical training is to provide each resident with clinical and academic experience to meet the requirements of the American Board of Surgery for the qualifying and certifying examination.

2.The clinical goal is to acquire sufficient clinical skills to become an independent and effective practitioner.  The attainment of these skills is acquired through a controlled and supervised environment.

3. The cognitive goal is to acquire substantial knowledge to become an independent and effective practitioner.  This goal includes knowledge from all the core areas of surgery.  The goal includes the reiteration of the knowledge base as well as the clinical application of it.

4.The procedural goals are to acquire sufficient procedural skills to become an independent and effective practitioner.
